Our Story
Based in Melbourne, Australia, Alter Space Interiors is a contemporary interior design studio founded by Maggie Zavala and Sarah Vautin.
After instantly connecting while studying at Melbourne’s renowned RMIT University, Maggie and Sarah went on to establish Alter Space Interiors together: a design studio that offers a fresh approach to classic design, specialising in tailoring unique spaces and creating custom solutions for both residential and small commercial projects.
Inspired by nature, form and influenced by historical references, Maggie and Sarah thrive on creating beautiful and superior spaces that evoke emotion and leave a lasting impression on their audience. Their shared passion for blending contemporary design with classical influences sees their style embracing elements of modern flair and contemporary colour schemes; while also drawing on a deeper understanding of the history and design intent behind the project site and its features to create timeless, unique interiors.
Alter Space Interiors are experts in creating inspired, functional spaces that complement and enhance their greater intention, and are specialists in colour selection, spatial planning, joinery design and custom-made soft furnishings.
Working closely and collaboratively with its clients, Alter Space Interiors provides total project management from inception through to completion, and prides itself on exceptional client care, transparent design process and, ultimately, stunning interior design.
Sarah Vautin
Coming from the world of finance, Sarah always harboured a secret desire to be an interior designer - and eventually, her passion for all facets of interior design and decoration drove her to pursue it as a career, where she could be free to create timeless, meaningful spaces for clients.
With a keen interest in sustainability, Sarah loves to source local and thoughtfully curated pieces, and is always aiming to develop concepts that have longevity and environmental impact in mind. She strives to create beautiful spaces with clever design that enhances the aesthetic and efficiency of the interior.
Drawing on her background, Sarah thrives on nurturing meaningful client relationships and managing project coordination, turning ideas and concepts into functional, inviting spaces that leave a lasting impression.
Maggie Zavala
Maggie’s passion for interiors began from a very young age, and while she began her career in graphic design, Maggie soon decided it was time to follow her instincts and transition to her first love - designing beautiful spaces.
Drawing on her graphic design background, Maggie’s eye for colour, textures and patterns, paired with a deep understanding of her clients’ aspirations and requirements, has given her an innate ability to bring design visions to life and create memorable contemporary spaces.
Driven by her ambition to create and work on meaningful projects, Maggie particularly enjoys the collaboration process with clients, allowing her to tailor projects to their needs and in turn create powerful and impactful results.
